New on AAAS: Carbon in Soil Only There Temporarily

Researchers studying the global carbon cycle have identified a previously unaccounted-for carbon source. In a new study, they estimate that approximately half of the carbon buried in the soil by erosion will be re-released into the atmosphere within the next 500 years - or possibly even faster, due to climate change. Read my Q&A with two of the study's authors, Dr. Johan Six and Dr. Kristof Van Oost, as a pdf or link.
