New on AAAS: A Bird That Can Recognize Relatives By Smell

Storm petrel seabirds use their sense of smell to tell relatives from unrelated birds. A new study, the first to demonstrate odor discrimination of kin by a bird, suggests petrels smell out unrelated birds as mates to avoid inbreeding.
